It is always around this time of year as I am slowly starting to put the garden to bed that I ask myself the question ‘what can I put directly on my soil that will break down over winter and that will provide the soil with nutrients and a better texture ready for next year’s flowers, fruits and vegetables and that doesn’t cost the earth?’
Well, here are some options:
- Leaf litter.
- Grass clippings.
- Compost.
- Straw.
- Wood chips.
- Other plant material such as weeds, cornstalks.
- Cover crops that are grown from seeds which are then dug into the soil such as Clover.
- Wood ashes from a wood burning fire.
- Manure.
And by doing this, hopefully this will help our plants to produce more fruits, flowers and foliage next year.
In the meantime, please do take a look at our shop for your garden sundries or garden plant requirements.
