It is a great time of year to get out in the garden and plant some flowers. Many people may think they have missed the boat with planting or sowing seeds, but actually there are still some flowers you can get away with this late on in the year.

You’ll need to go to your local garden centre to get the right seeds and equipment to plant flowers. Remember, it is important to get the right soil for each flower or vegetable you are growing, so check the instructions on the seed packet and give it the best start you can!

If you wants to brighten up your garden with flowers, you can still sow Calendula, Candytuft, Larkspur and Limnanthes for a show of flowers later this summer. If you want something that is quick to flower, Nasturtiums are ideal and can still be planted in June. Put them in plant pots on patios for a quick growing plant. If you want to fill out your borders, Nigella seeds will give you some striking blue late-summer flowers. Of course, if you have kids, sunflower seeds are also a good lot of fun.

If you have a greenhouse, however large or small, you can also use it at this time of year to plant some flowers for next year. It is never too early to prepare for the next year! For example, try growing Forget-me-nots, Foxgloves and Wallflowers in seed trays in your greenhouse for flowering next year. You’ll also want your garden to look great in winter, so sow pansies now for your winter containers. You could also sow perennial seeds like Bellis, Canterbury Bells, Delphiniums and Lupins.

If you are into growing a little fruit and veg, gherkin seeds and cucumber can be planted in containers in your greenhouse at this time of year. You can also sow runner beans and French beans, as well as cabbage seeds – which usually require a long growing season. Keep them tucked away safe in your greenhouse and check on them regularly to ensure they have enough water.

Remember that you don’t need a large garden to plant flowers. Even a balcony on an apartment or flat can work wonders! The smallest of spaces can provide a tranquil respite from the world, so caring for and enjoying your garden is always a good idea, giving you a great place to relax and unwind, and helping boost the look (and possibly value) of your home.
