Gardening should not all be about hard work. As Gardeners, we are on a constant journey and it is essential that we enjoy the journey and take in the scenery whilst en route. So please don’t worry too much about the annoying thicket of brambles that needs cutting down or the overgrown Ivy, for these are great nesting sites for a variety of birds and the Birds both benefit and enjoy the fruits of both. Why not just enjoy the wild areas for a while, take in their natural beauty, and see what emerges? You may find that after observing ‘the wild area’ for a while that you do not want to get rid of the ‘wildness’ totally, you might just want to evolve it a little, if it is not working for you in its present state.
A few years ago, we had a border near our house that was a challenge. Every year a constant stream of brambles and weeds would emerge that we found very difficult to control, but the Wrens seemed to be very happy in this wild overrun area so we decided to try and evolve this area so that some of the area stayed ‘wild and untamed’ for the Wrens but that some of it was ‘cultivated’ as we wanted. Very happily, over a number of years, we have managed to do this by slowly introducing a range of honeysuckles in place of the wildness of the brambles, and we still have the Wrens.
This is a picture of a little Wren who somehow managed to fly into a window, became dazed, but who was fine. The area is now filled with a great thicket of rampant Honeysuckles, Roses and Lilies.
